We are more than just social animals. Our lives don’t merely coexist with others; we live among them and within them. It is others who place us in the world and determine our position within it. Their act of seeing and recognizing us solidifies our existence as distinct beings. Our identity is nothing but the result of years of growth and formation under the gaze of others; it is nothing but the image of ourselves that we gather from the eyes of others. What we see is a reflection of what they see, or what we believe they see. But when we fall out of their sight, when we are ignored, our existence, in a sense, comes to a halt and ceases to move.
